Charles
led by example, working always for a sensible solution and consensus.
His sense
of humour and calm determination kept us all going, when frustration
and
despair got to some of us. It is good that after all this time, Charles
could
eventually see real prospects of success and an acceptable, if not
perfect,
outcome of his long work and hard effort, and we're even more
determined now to
make sure it happens.
We and his family have greatly appreciated and been comforted by the
many
tributes paid to Charles, from people of all walks of life, many of
whom did not
know him closely. One, from a senior newspaper reporter, stands out :
"Even
though I scarcely knew him, his
example helped me. Knowing that he was out there fighting for what he
believed
in - it gave me fuel to keep my own fires burning. This is a city, a
State and
a nation that desperately needs citizens of Mr Briers' commitment and
conscience."
